General Guidance

Undergraduate students

We welcome motivated undergraduate students with a strong interest in Earth system science to participate in our research. Students are expected to have solid backgrounds in computer programming, mathematics, and physics. Funding support may be available depending on project needs.

Graduate students

We are seeking talented and motivated graduate students to work on one or more of the following research areas:

  • Modeling land–atmosphere exchanges of carbon, water, and energy across spatial and temporal scales.
  • Integrating artificial intelligence tools into Earth system research.
  • Using remote sensing data to assess ecosystem responses of carbon, water, and energy cycles to environmental changes.
  • Applying vegetation radiative transfer modeling to investigate ecosystem processes in combination with Earth system models and remote sensing.
  • Linking Earth system models with integrated assessment models (e.g., GCAM) to explore human–Earth system interactions and their implications for policy.

All applicants must meet the University of Wisconsin–Madison Graduate School admission requirements. International applicants must also satisfy the English language proficiency requirements (TOEFL or IELTS). We particularly encourage applications from students with strong quantitative skills and computer programming experience.

Postdoctoral Researchers

We regularly seek postdoctoral researchers to work on scientific and technical challenges in Earth system science, particularly in the area of land–atmosphere interactions. We are especially interested in candidates with expertise in:

  • Data analysis and assimilation (including machine learning approaches).
  • Land surface modeling.Integrated assessment modeling and climate change economics.
  • Remote sensing theory and applications.

Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Dr. Min Chen to discuss potential collaborations, including fellowship opportunities (e.g., NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship, NOAA Climate & Global Change Postdoctoral Program) and joint proposal development.
